CONFUSION over signage on Toolijooa Road has led to a call for more speed limit signs.
Berry resident Deb Wordsworth has requested another 60 km/h sign be erected on Toolijooa Road.
She believed a sign that reads Unsealed Road No advisory Speeds Drive to Conditions is causing some confusion.
“In January, I wrote to the Shoalhaven City Council about speeding on Toolijooa Road and the confusing speed limit sign at the beginning of the unsealed part of the road near Beach Road.
“It suggests that there is no speed limit at all on the whole unsealed section of Toolijooa Road when travelling towards Kiama.
“A sign reads Unsealed Road No advisory Speeds Drive to Conditions.
“However if you are travelling from Kiama, there is a very clear 60km/h sign which covers the whole of the unsealed section when travelling in that direction.
“Maybe a recent accident and other accidents which have happened over the years could have been avoided if this Unsealed Road No advisory Speeds Drive to Conditions signage was enhanced with a sign saying that the maximum speed over and above the conditions is still 60km/h,” she said.
A spokesperson for Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) said the organisation was responsible for speed zone signs on NSW roads.
“The care and control of local roads lies with council,” the spokesperson said.
“Toolijooa Road is speed zoned for its entire length.
“Motorists turning into Toolijooa Road from Beach Road are advised by speed limit signs on both sides of the road, a 60 km/h speed limit applies.
“At the bridge over the railway line there is a sign which says “Unsealed Road No Advisory Speeds Drive to Conditions”.
“The sign advises motorists speed advisory signs have not been installed on curves as the condition of unsealed roads changes according to weather conditions.
“A speed limit of 60 km/h is the maximum speed allowed on this section of road as indicated by the sign installed 300 metres before the bridge.”
Shoalhaven City Council’s works and services manager Paul Collins inspected the road and signage on Friday and believed the signage that is in place was appropriate.
He said council would investigate the need for an additional 60 km/h as a speed limit reinforcement sign.
